| Rosco Canoe Construction
All of our boats, regardless of construction technique, feature extra reinforcing in critical areas. All of our laminates have been tested over the past 30 years in our and many other rental fleets to meet the most rigorous demands of canoeing. In our Royalex® canoes, the bow, stern, center section and keel line are reinforced for unmatched durability and stiffness. In our composite canoes, specially engineered resins maximize durability and stiffness, while extra layers of fabric reinforce critical wear and impact areas.
The Hidden Features:
We pride ourselves on building exceptional canoes, but many of the features we incorporate in each of our canoe designs are hidden…

Hull Materials
No other manufacturer can match Rosco Canoes ability to craft high-tech materials into timeless designs with outstanding performance. Each of our construction techniques has unique advantages and the simplest way to approach the complex question of selecting the right material is to determine where or how you will paddle. There are other factors to consider, such as weight and price, but being honest with yourself about where and how you paddle is the best place to start. Rest assured that whichever Rosco canoe you buy, you’re buying the best.
For more information on our range of hull materials have a look at the dedicated Royalex (RX) and Fiberglass (FG) pages.
Gunwales:
Since these form the frame that supports the hull, they must be stiff, strong and weather resistant. We use two different gunwale systems
Vinyl Gunwales (Royalex canoes)
All our Royalex canoes feature extruded black vinyl gunwales made to our special design and are internally reinforced for additional rigidity. These gunwales rival wood for strength, are very durable yet lightweight and need no special care or maintenance.
Aluminum Gunwales
Our fiberglass canoes come equiped with lightweight and low maintenance aluminium gunnels, which are intended for lighter weight composite canoes. Rosco's has pioneered the manufacturing of custom moulded alloy gunnels within Australia. Combining over 40 years experience in gunnel manufacturing, from wood classics through to the 25 year tried and tested durability of the moulded alloy gunnel system, this is truly the best combination of lightweight construction and extreme durability.
Hardware
All hardware used by Rosco Canoes, including canoe–bolts, machine screws, and gunwale screws are stainless steel, which offers superior strength and corrosion resistance. On vinyl and aluminum gunwales we use anodized aluminum rivets coloured to match the gunwales.
Seats & Thwarts
All our standard thwarts and seat mounts are manufactured form heavy duty alloy tubing ensuring strength and rigidity. Seats are made with herculite double rip stop vinyl providing maintenance-free durability, unsurpassed strength and a cool, quick-drying, comfortable and quite handsome seat.
Buoyancy
Our composite canoes are equiped with sealed foam-filled buoyancy cells on the bow and stern to ensure positive flotation, encourage self-righting and ensure an easy rescue should the need arise.
Our Royalex canoes have positive flotation incorporated in the material and therefore don't require additional buoyancy. However, if using a Royalex canoe with an outboard motor we recommend either in-board flotation tanks or outriggers to provide positive flotation.
Kevlar Skid Plates (Royalex Canoes)
Optional integral Kevlar® skid plates increase durability without compromising paddling efficiency or appearance. While Royalex canoes are durable, they may be subjected to extreme uses where heavy, sharp impacts occur. Kevlar Skid Plates on the bow and stern of a Royalex canoe can often be used to repair damage, or it can be applied beforehand to give added defense. Skid plates for Royalex canoes can be applied at time of manufacturing or purchased later and installed by us afterwards.
